Comfort Zone

Sometimes I find myself asking, “Me? A missionary?” I could go into many reasons I’m inadequate and unqualified for this. A list I could easily provide. Just like Moses did when God told him to go tell Pharaoh to set the children of Israel free. Moses gave God 5 reasons he couldn’t do it. As if God could have gotten this call on Moses’s life wrong. As if God didn’t know what He was doing.
Well, I have a theory on this now. We can sometimes get so settled into our comfort zone that we can’t learn what God wants to teach us. Jonathan and I were very comfortable. Our home was a sanctuary where we sheltered ourselves from the rest of the world and lived somewhat as an island. The RV though…..not so much a sanctuary. Missionary life…….outside of our comfort zone. So, in my estimation (using my limited human reasoning), God is rocking our world to get us out of our comfort zones into His world with His people so He can teach us and use us for His glory. He could, of course, use us here in America and a Christian presence is definitely needed in America. The problem for us is that we have such a tendency to be lulled to sleep here in a land of prosperity…..so to a third-world country we go.
So how good is God in all of this though? He’s not torturing us. We aren’t always comfortable but we’re always filled with peace. It’s out of our comfort zone but where we are weak, He is strong. I’ll tell you how great God is. I can look back on my life and see a thread running from childhood to now where He has been preparing me for missionary service and giving me a heart and passion for it. I stick with my theory that He is pulling me out of my comfort zone so He can use me and teach me but He isn’t doing it with disregard to how I feel. He is filling me with excitement, love, peace, and joy.
I guess the moral of my story is…..don’t get too comfortable or God will send you to a third-world country.
Have a great weekend and may the Lord bless you, teach you, and use you where you are.
