Is it really about “going”?
When I first received the call to be a full-time missionary, I couldn’t wait to find out which mission agency I’d be serving with. Once that was determined, I couldn’t wait to get through the process to acceptance. With that step complete, I couldn’t wait to begin training. I began training looking ahead to where I may go to serve. Now that I’m closer to knowing where I’ll be going and I’m a good piece through training I’m wondering…..is it really about “going”? If I keep looking ahead to the next step, I’m going to miss a lot along the way. Each day God can use me. Each day God can teach me. Each day I can rejoice in my relationship with the Lord. Instead of anticipating the future, I can enjoy the journey. A friend at church yesterday said to me, “Nothing is wasted in God’s economy.” How true! Jesus may return before we ever make it to the field. Would all this time be wasted then? Of course not! It’s not about the work, the results, the accomplishments, or getting to a certain point or destination. The joy is in the journey. So, let’s enjoy it. Let’s enjoy Him…each moment of each day, not sometime in the future.
“Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” ~James 4:13,14
