Something New
I’m telling you, I learn something new here every day.
When we get our milk it comes fresh from the cow. Still warm even. So we have to boil out any unpleasantries that could cause crummies in tummies (ode to Dr. Seuss). I watched Mama boil our milk last week and she poured it from the container through a sieve into a pot. I was interested so I asked her why she did it that way.
She said that sometimes when they milk the cow some of its hair goes into the milk.
Blek!
Didn’t really need to know that. But. I will always be using a sieve in the future!

I grew up on unpastueurized milk. We got it from the farmer down the road. However, maybe there are different cleanliness standards here in Canada than in Africa! We never found crummies in our milk. The cows were washed down before milking, milking was done with machines, and the milk was sent right to a refridgerated bulk tank. A few years ago, however, the government cracked down on laws saying farmers couldn’t sell milk from their bulk tanks. It was more politics from the milk companies (who want all the business) than real concerns about safety.

Oh…no… There’s this guy who works around the compound doing construction, maintenance, etc. He has a cow he keeps tied up around here and sometimes he goes, sits down next to it, and milks it into a bucket. And that’s our milk!
Not quite the same safety standards here…
