Does it Matter?
Okay, so I’ve gotten into this meal planning pretty well. So does it matter that I have yet to actually stick to the plan?
I’m thinking it doesn’t matter and the reason is this… If I insist on keeping to the plan that means I become rigid. I have kept myself flexible (not a normal posture for me) and most of my changes are due to events that I couldn’t have foreseen.
Although…
It seems that my mom always had a meal plan and stuck to it.
Maybe I should try harder.
Although…
Most of my meals have ground beef in one form or another so I’ve just chosen to switch the menu around or create something different with the ingredients I already had out. There should be room in the kitchen for inspiration and creativity!
And. Good news, good news. The “cream cheese man” in town got a shipment of chicken. Boneless chicken breasts. And won’t be getting anymore for a while with the shortage problem. So we stocked up a bit and now can have at least 1 night a week reprieve from beef.
He also had talapia. Yum. But. It’s whole talapia. From Lake Victoria. That’s quite a long journey north of here. And we’ve never seen a refridgerated truck. How long can fish stay good after caught? We just haven’t gotten up the nerve to try that out yet. Nothing like bad fish to ruin your appetite for a few days.

Ha! Ha! I fooled you didn’t I. You just thought I stuck to it. Actually, what I do is plan a meal for each night but I don’t have that exact thing on that night because, as you said, things change and time restraints made me switch things around. The main thing I planned my meals for:
1) To be better organized when I went grocery shopping which helped me to keep a budget.
2) To have an idea of what I was fixing each night so I wouldn’t have to suddenly think about that when I arrived home from work.
Thanks for noticing.
Love
Mom

Apparently if the flies like the fish then it’s probably ok. If there’s no flies nearby you probably don’t want to eat it! That’s also a good way of telling whether the fish has been caught using poisonous chemicals – if it has then the flies won’t swarm around it.

I’m with ya on the meal planning. I have enough pantry stuff that if we don’t want taco salad with our thawed ground beef then we can do pasta with meat sauce instead. My buds (and Mick’s buds) may just be in the mood for italian on mexican night. I think the key is that you have planned well enough ahead that you can prepare “something” be it burgers, pasta, or taco salad! Rock on, girl!
PS – I never got around meatball recipe last night but I think I’m gonna do it tonight, so I’ll let you know how it goes…

Mom – yes, you totally fooled me!! At least I know I can be a bit flexible then.
Mark – they bring the fish and immediately put it in the freezer…so no way to know according to fly activity I don’t guess.
Thanks for the encouragement Angela!

Do you reckon you could go vegetarian a couple of nights a week? That would also give you a reprieve from beef, be a little easier on your budget, and force you to get creative with your cooking. (We switched to a vegetarian diet for 5-6 nights a week back in 2002 when we were saving hard for our overseas jaunt and haven’t looked back…)
